What it is: A calcium blood test measures the total level of calcium, an essential mineral for nerves, muscles, bones, and the heart, in the blood.
Why it's ordered: Usually ordered as part of a metabolic panel to evaluate bone, kidney, thyroid, or parathyroid conditions, or when symptoms like muscle cramps, weakness, or confusion raise concern.
What it detects: Calcium levels reflect the balance between bone storage, dietary intake, and hormonal regulation (parathyroid hormone and vitamin D). Abnormal levels can point to parathyroid disorders, kidney disease, certain cancers, or vitamin D problems.
Collection & prep: A standard blood draw from a vein in the arm, typically as part of a broader metabolic panel. No special prep is usually required.
Results:
High (hypercalcemia) – can reflect overactive parathyroid glands, certain cancers, or excess vitamin D
Low (hypocalcemia) – can reflect underactive parathyroid glands, vitamin D deficiency, or kidney disease
Normal – calcium regulation appears balanced
Possible complications of a calcium imbalance: Significant abnormalities can affect heart rhythm, bone strength, and nerve function, so abnormal total calcium is often followed up with ionized calcium, parathyroid hormone, or vitamin D testing to pinpoint the cause.
