What it is: A chloride blood test measures the level of chloride, an electrolyte that helps maintain fluid balance and acid-base balance, in the blood.
Why it's ordered: Usually ordered as part of an electrolyte or metabolic panel to evaluate fluid balance, kidney function, or acid-base disorders, or when symptoms like vomiting, dehydration, or breathing changes raise concern.
What it detects: Chloride levels typically track closely with sodium. Abnormal levels can reflect dehydration, kidney disease, or acid-base imbalances (chloride tends to rise as bicarbonate falls, and vice versa).
Collection & prep: A standard blood draw from a vein in the arm, usually alongside sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate. No special prep is typically required.
Results:
