Collection & prep: A standard blood draw from a vein in the arm as part of a lipid panel; some labs request 9–12 hours of fasting, particularly if triglycerides are very high, since that affects the LDL calculation.
Results:
Below 100 mg/dL – optimal for most people (below 70 mg/dL for those with diabetes)
Above target range – classified as borderline, intermediate, or high cardiovascular risk depending on the level
Possible complications of high LDL: Sustained high LDL contributes to atherosclerosis and raises the risk of heart attack and stroke; treatment targets vary based on a person's overall cardiovascular risk profile, not LDL alone.
