What it is: A platelet count measures the number of platelets, small cell fragments that help blood clot, typically as part of a complete blood count.
Why it's ordered: Ordered alongside a CBC to evaluate unexplained bruising or bleeding, monitor bone marrow function, or check clotting risk before surgery.
What it detects: Low platelets (thrombocytopenia) raise bleeding risk and can result from bone marrow disorders, certain medications, autoimmune conditions, or liver disease; high platelets (thrombocytosis) can raise clotting risk and may reflect inflammation, iron deficiency, or a bone marrow disorder.
Collection & prep: A standard blood draw from a vein in the arm, as part of a CBC. No special preparation is typically required.
Results:
Low – increases bleeding risk; needs evaluation if significantly below normal
High – increases clotting risk; can reflect inflammation or a bone marrow condition
Normal – typically 150,000–450,000 platelets/µL
Possible complications: Very low platelet counts can lead to spontaneous bleeding, while very high counts can raise clot risk; both extremes typically prompt further evaluation to find the underlying cause.
